SDGP Potato Value Chain Project Rwanda

We are part of a consortium of industry leaders funded by RVO Netherlands with the aim of improving the potato value chain in Rwanda. This project aims to:

  • Improve the seed potato chain in Rwanda
  • Establish the ware potato chain in Rwanda
  • Train farmers on agricultural best practices
  • Increase Rwanda’s storage capacity for seed- and ware potatoes
  • Improve farmer’s access to finance

Our factory is Solynta’s testing site in Rwanda. We have a dedicated nursery and demo fields that are being used for trial runs of their hybrid potato seeds. Hollanda Fairfoods tests and processes Solynta’s potatoes in their factory and actively participates in the development of this very unique solution for the potato industry.

Solynta

Solynta is a Dutch company that develops hybrid potato varieties and seeds. This unique project is going to change the way potato breeding is done globally.

By using potato seeds in stead of tubers, product development can be done way faster and also in more efficient ways:

  • 25 grams of hybrid potato seeds are needed to plant 1 hectare in stead of 2500 kg’s of potato tuber seeds
  • Clean and disease free hybrid potato seeds in stead of potato tuber seeds which can be contaminated
  • Easy transport and storage
  • Hybrid seeds allow for years of safe storage
